Researcher to Entrepreneur | Dr. Pedram Dehdari | An Interview

Can you describe a pivotal moment in your career that significantly shaped your perspective across life sciences, entrepreneurship, and agriculture, and influenced your approach to creating meaningful societal impact?

The turning point came when I realized that scientific innovation only creates value when it is translated into real-world solutions. Working across life sciences, biotechnology, healthcare, agriculture, and sustainability in more than 70 countries has shown me that true impact comes from transforming scientific knowledge into practical, scalable innovations that improve lives and address global challenges.

A pivotal moment in my career came after years of working on biotechnology projects across developing and emerging economies. I realized that the greatest challenge was rarely the lack of technology it was the inability to translate scientific innovation into scalable, commercially viable, and locally sustainable solutions. This insight fundamentally changed my perspective.

Since then, I have focused on bridging science, entrepreneurship, and industry by transforming research into practical businesses that address real societal needs. Whether developing pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, sustainable biotechnology processes, antimicrobial food packaging, or circular bio economy solutions from agricultural and marine resources, my goal has remained the same: create technologies that improve health, strengthen food security, generate local employment, and promote environmental sustainability.

This experience shaped my belief that meaningful impact is achieved not through scientific breakthroughs alone, but by integrating innovation with entrepreneurship, strategic partnerships, and long-term economic value to deliver lasting benefits for society.

How do you integrate research, innovation, and entrepreneurship to develop practical solutions that address real-world challenges in agriculture, sustainability, and the life sciences?

I integrate research, innovation, and entrepreneurship by starting with real market and societal needs rather than technology alone. Scientific research provides the foundation, innovation transforms discoveries into practical and scalable solutions, and entrepreneurship ensures these solutions are commercially viable and sustainable.

Throughout my career, I have combined scientific expertise with industrial implementation to develop technologies in biotechnology, sustainable agriculture, food security, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and the circular bio economy. My approach emphasizes collaboration with academia, industry, investors, and governments to bridge the gap between laboratory research and successful commercialization.

I believe that the most impactful innovations are those that create measurable value improving health, increasing agricultural productivity, reducing environmental impact, and generating sustainable economic opportunities for communities.

What’s your take on the startup and innovation landscape in the GCC, particularly for ventures at the intersection of agriculture and life sciences? What is your approach to making critical decisions when working across multidisciplinary domains, particularly in balancing scientific rigor, innovation, business strategy, and societal needs?

The GCC is rapidly becoming a strong hub for innovation, supported by government investment, ambitious national strategies, and growing private capital. I see exceptional opportunities at the intersection of life sciences, biotechnology, agriculture, and sustainability, particularly in technologies that strengthen food security, healthcare, and the bio economy. The region has the potential to become a global leader in translating innovation into real-world impact.

Coming to my approach to critical decision-making is evidence-based, multidisciplinary, and impact-oriented. I begin by evaluating the scientific and technical evidence, then assess technical feasibility, commercial viability, regulatory requirements, and potential societal and environmental impact.

Working across biotechnology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and sustainability has taught me that the best decisions are rarely driven by a single discipline. They require balancing scientific rigor with innovation, business strategy, and long-term value creation while considering the needs of stakeholders, markets, and society.

I believe successful innovation is achieved when scientifically sound solutions are practical, economically sustainable, and capable of delivering measurable benefits for people, industry, and the environment.

Which emerging discoveries, technologies, or innovations across life sciences, agriculture, and entrepreneurship excite you the most for shaping a more sustainable and resilient future? What recommendations would you give to future founders, regardless of industry, based on what you’ve learned building across these fields?

The innovations that excite me most are those that combine biotechnology and the circular bio economy to address global challenges in health, food security, and sustainability. I see tremendous potential in bio-based materials, precision agriculture, industrial biotechnology, advanced bioprocessing, and the valorization of agricultural and marine by-products into high-value products.

I am particularly inspired by technologies that replace fossil-based materials, reduce waste, improve resource efficiency, and strengthen resilient food and healthcare systems. The future belongs to innovations that are scientifically advanced, scalable, economically viable, and capable of creating lasting environmental and societal impact. My passion is translating these innovations into sustainable businesses that deliver measurable benefits for industry, communities, and future generations.

For all the future founders, I would recommend to build with vision, but stay grounded in market reality. Focus on solving real customer problems and securing paying customers not just raising investment. Strong businesses are built on execution, resilience, and sustainable value creation, where innovation is matched by commercial success and long-term impact.

Looking at everything you’ve contributed across these fields, what legacy do you hope to leave, and how do you want it to inspire the next generation of researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and change makers who follow?

I hope my legacy will be demonstrating that science, innovation, and entrepreneurship can work together to create meaningful and lasting impact. I believe successful businesses should be driven not only by profit, but also by passion, purpose, and responsibility. Commercial success is important, but creating sustainable innovations that improve lives and contribute to a better future is equally essential. If I inspire future researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and change makers to combine scientific excellence with integrity, build businesses with both purpose and profitability, and transform ideas into solutions that benefit society, then I will consider my contribution worthwhile.

In this context I personally hope to leave my legacy by transforming scientific knowledge into practical innovations that improve lives, strengthen food and healthcare systems, and promote a more sustainable world. Beyond developing technologies, I aspire to build businesses, partnerships, and opportunities that continue creating value long after individual projects are completed.

I would like my work to inspire the next generation to think beyond traditional boundaries—to combine scientific excellence with entrepreneurship, sustainability, and social responsibility. I believe the greatest success is not measured by publications or products alone, but by the lasting positive impact we create for people, industry, and future generations.
